Pollard and The Peace Process NY Times - July 20, 1999

An Introductory Note:

Jonathan Pollard has been linked to the Middle East peace process ever since the late Prime Minister Rabin established a link between Jonathan Pollard and the release of Palestinian terrorists in October of 1995.

At the Wye Summit in October of 1998, Jonathan Pollard was the deal maker - not a last minute deal breaker interjected by former P.M. Binyamin Netanyahu, as the White House later claimed.

Netanyahu originally only agreed to attend the Wye summit based on Clinton's promise that Jonathan Pollard would be given to the Israeli prime minister once a deal was signed. At the summit, Clinton closed the Wye deal by committing to an exact date for Pollard's release. In return, Israel granted immunity to terrorist, Gaza Chief of Police Ghazi Jabali, and agreed to the release of another 750 Palestinian terrorists, many with blood on their hands. Negotiators - on both sides of the table, including the former Prime Minister - confirm the Clinton deal and double-cross on Pollard.

The White House immediately went to work on changing history to whitewash the Clinton double-cross at Wye. They continue to this day. Their unending insistence that Pollard is not a part of the peace process is as meaningless as it is incredible. But they keep asking us to believe it anyway. The following excerpt from the New York Times reflects yet another attempt to convince us that Pollard is not part of the peace process. As soon as we all believe it again, Clinton can once again secretly agree to swap Pollard for more unilateral Israeli concessions, and the saga of the same Persian carpet that Washington keeps selling to Jerusalem over and over again for increasingly higher prices can go on and on...

From the NY Times - July 20, 1999 - Clinton to Press Syrian to Reopen Talks With Israel

...On the sensitive issue of Jonathan Jay Pollard, a former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst who is serving a life sentence in the United States for spying for Israel, Barak declined to comment at the news conference, beyond saying he would like to see him released.

Pollard was arrested in 1985, pleaded guilty and was given a life sentence in 1987. Clinton has twice denied clemency to Pollard. But on the last day of the talks at Wye last year, Clinton pledged to Netanyahu that he would review the Pollard case after Netanyahu made it an issue and the director of Central Intelligence, George Tenet, threatened to resign if he were released, senior American officials said at the time.

Clinton asked Charles Ruff, the White House counsel, to compile an interagency report on whether Pollard should be released. [*N.B. What ever happened to the review that Clinton himself promised to do? Remember after the Wye fiasco he promised publicly to personally conduct a review of the Pollard case, to hear from

all parties

, not just the Defense Intelligence Agencies, and to decide expeditiously - by January of 1999. Or did we all just imagine these things? ]

After the news conference, the national security adviser, Sandy Berger, said that Barak, like all other Israeli prime ministers who had met with Clinton, had raised the issue of Pollard's status with the president.

Berger said Clinton had not yet received the report from Ruff. *[See P.S. below]

According to Berger's account of the conversation between Clinton and Barak on the Pollard case, the prime minister said that the Pollard case should not be part of the peace negotiations. At Wye, Netanyahu had threatened to walk out unless Pollard was released.

If Mr. Ruff is having difficulty making a decision about Jonathan Pollard's fate, we suggest that he read the latest Larry Dub letter which was personally hand-delivered by Pollard's attorney to the American Ambassador to Israel, the honorable Ned Walker, when they met in Jerusalem on July 9, 1999. All Mr. Ruff has to do is respond to the questions that Dub poses in his letter, and the truth will be painfully obvious.
